There was less news to report then, or at least there were less news channels (and probably no 24-hours news channels), and news wasn't generally reported as quickly then as it is now, so it didn't become stale so quickly.

You had a house? Lucky beggar! We had to make do with cardboard when we could find some. Then we had to get up half an hour before we went to bed to sweep chimnies for the rich folk.

Well, I say fire, but it were only when we could steal a piece of coal from when t'lorry called at t'big 'ouse over t' road! - We used to take turns in holding it. Dad used to warm it up for us at Christmas - if we were lucky.

You had a fire? Lucky beggar! We had to make do with wearing blankets, when we could afford them!

Nostalgic isn't it? Similar for me as well, except for I grew up in Carlton, Nottingham. I remember my Dad pull up in his old 70s car, with the news on in the background, he'd come in, hang his coat up and sit down with his paper. I'll never forget his face when he looked down the end of his nose over his glasses at the television with the Nottingham Evening Post open in his hands.

No bongs, coz it was at 10:15 if you look at the clock face.

"This is Thames. From London!" Sends chills down the spine that does - in remembrance of things past (Probably my Dad coming back from the pub at that time, opening the front door and letting a blast of cold air it!) No central heating in those days! - We were lucky to have a fire! ;)
